B-1010 for 2010 : this month, a proposal by Lucia Bru (in : the Bulletin, April issue)

`

This month, we present a proposal by Lucia BRU (F) :

a white container, suspended from a hook, which seems to be floating in the air. It is a striking image which speaks directly to the viewer. The tight framing of the subject takes it out from its specific context and thereby widens the scope of possible interpretations. There is an overall feeling of transitional, if dynamic, precarity to it. It is as if the artist was commenting on the ever-evolving “under construction” state of Belgium’s institutions. As if the country was, just like its capital city (which is the European capital whose appearance has most drastically changed over the past hundred and fifty years without having suffered the effects of war or any other cataclysm), constantly “en chantier”. Some times for the better, sometimes not… A good illustration for this is precisely the very history of the former cité Administrative de l’Etat / Rijksadministratief centrum. A more immaterial reading of Lucia Bru’s image would be to apprehend the floating character of the container as a metaphor for the floating character of the future destiny reserved to Brussels’ inhabitants. Uncertain but, thereby, also definitely open and full of possibilities.
