REDSHIFT : An Exhibition by Véronique BOUDIER For Bn PROJECTS – Maison GREGOIRE

Bn PROJECTS and Maison Grégoire are particularly pleased to invite Véronique Boudier for her first solo exhibition in Belgium.

Boudier’s work is very much an invitation to a reflexive gaze or to a sustained contemplation. Sometimes it is about the gaze being withheld in the duration of the unfolding of the work, when it is not constantly prickled by the seemingly repetitive occurrence of a given image. Some other times it is about the interrogation of a reflexive consciousness and the possible recreation of a missing link. All these different approaches to the act of beholding are activated in the present exhibition conceived for Maison Grégoire which combines a film, a video tableau mouvementé and sculptural installation.

To begin with, there is Nuit d’un Jour (2008) a film which, after having been shown in the programmation of Prospectif Cinéma and at the Le Lait art centre in Castres, will soon be presented at Beaubourg (Elles end of jan. 2010) and at the Institut d’Art Contemporain of Villeurbanne. Nuit d’un Jour is a film which is to be apprehended in the integrality of its duration. It operates, in the very slowness of its unfolding, as a sort of epiphany. in all the polysemy of its possible readings and interpretations and as a litteraltabula rasa in bucolic landscape, the work captivates the viewer’s attention through the inexorable pace of its narrative structure, whilst gradually unveiling the promise of a change, a rebirth and or a renewal. Beyond, the work may also be understood as the metaphor of a logic and a necessity which are inherent to the creative act, as an illustration of the necessity of destruction or disappearance.

As an integrated counterpoint to the narrative sequence of Nuit d’un Jour, Véronique Boudier’s tableaux mouvementés and short videos, such as L’Eponge, somehow also operate through the hypnotic rapture of the beholder’s gaze. Whether it be through the persistent observation of a water fall, the quiet and indifferent flow of a river or the regular submersion of a sponge, these works present us with the suggestion of vital, if fragile, flows and pulsations, as iterative as they are unforeseeable.

In the sculptural installation Du château specially conceived for maison Grégoire, it is the virtual link between the sculptural gesture and its roots in the childhood’s memories of the artist, which is being subsumed through the observation of the piece. Illustrating a further variation on the theme of disappearance and renewal, and standing in a clearly dialectical and discursive contrast with both the architecture and Nuit d’un JOUR, the work welcomes from the start the visitor. Whether it metaphorically protects or obstructs the visit is of course subject to perception and interpretation. Beyond, if it acts as a pregnant and symbolic metaphor for all our promethean endeavours, as an evocation of the fear of the external aggressions which we try to exorcise from the start in our childhood’s games, it also addresses a specific understanding of the poïetic gesture.
